Just In Why Patrick Mahomes injury sparks concerns for Kansas City Chiefs’ 2026 season details hereππππ
he 2026 NFL season is still months away, but the outlook for the Kansas City Chiefs has taken a dramatic turn following the events of the 2025 season, when their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes did not finish the year after suffering an injury that required months of recovery.
Originally, Mahomes was expected to be ready to begin training camp on time, but now one question echoes across Missouri: Why is Patrick Mahomes’ injury generating so many doubts about the 2026 season when everything seemed resolved?
The answer lies in the severity and origin of the incident. It all happened during the fourth quarter of a 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15. As Mahomes tried to extend a play, he was tackled from behind and his left leg became trapped in the turf, causing his knee to bend unnaturally.
Medical tests confirmed the worst: a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL), accompanied by an avulsion fracture.
This combination of ligament and bone damage has forced the Chiefs into not only a physical reconstruction, but also a schematic one. Dan Orlovsky, an ESPN analyst, warned Andy Reid about the excessive load Mahomes has carried: “It’s like a slow fade with Patrick in Kansas City… just because he can [carry the load] doesn’t mean he should carry that load for most of an 18-game season.”
With that analysis in mind, there is a possibility that Reid will have to immediately restructure his offensive scheme, even considering the scenario in which Mahomes is not at full strength.
Russell Wilson’s verdict: Mahomes among the greats
Amid his rehabilitation, comparisons and respect from his peers have not stopped. Russell Wilson, current quarterback of the New York Giants and a former division rival, recently appeared on the show “Hot Ones Versus,” where he had to rank the best quarterbacks, including himself.
Wilson did not hold back in his praise for the Chiefs’ leader, placing him above historic legends and even above his own career. “I’m gonna go Peyton Manning 4 only because I beat you, Peyton… Me 3. Patrick Mahomes 2, ‘coz he won multiple Super Bowls and Tom Brady 1,” Wilson said while taking on the spicy wings challenge.
