Prince Harry Opens Up About the Emotional Battle Nobody Saw During His Royal Exit

Prince Harry has offered another deeply personal account of his life before and after stepping away from royal duties, revealing an emotional struggle that he says caught him completely by surprise.

The Duke of Sussex recently discussed his mental health during a conversation with neuroscientist Dr Mary-Frances O’Connor for a MasterClass session titled Redefining Grief: Building Resilience Through Loss.

Among his revelations was an admission that he experienced a period of depression after relocating to Canada with Meghan Markle in 2019, during a particularly difficult period for the Royal Family.

But what Harry described goes beyond the challenges of leaving Britain.

The Emotional Crash After Leaving Britain

Harry explained that he and Meghan initially travelled to Canada to get some distance from the stressful circumstances surrounding their lives.

However, the change in environment brought an unexpected experience.

According to the Duke, within two or three days of arriving in Canada, he experienced what he described as an adrenaline crash.

He explained that he had become accustomed to operating under constant pressure and suddenly struggled when that environment disappeared.

Harry admitted that he slipped into depression for approximately two weeks and felt as though he could not function without the adrenaline associated with stress.

The revelation offers a different perspective on the period leading up to the Sussexes’ departure from their positions as senior working royals.

Their decision to step back was announced in January 2020, following their earlier stay in Canada.

Princess Diana’s Death Left a Lasting Mark

Harry also spoke about something that had affected him for much longer.

The Duke revealed that following the death of his mother, Princess Diana, in 1997, he spent years struggling to process his grief.

He was just 12 years old when Diana died in a car accident in Paris.

Harry explained that he had become emotionally numb and struggled to remember details such as his mother’s laugh and appearance.

He also described feeling that remaining unhappy was somehow a way of demonstrating how much he missed her.

In his later years, he began to understand that experiencing happiness did not mean he was betraying his mother’s memory.

He credited therapy with helping him confront feelings he had suppressed for years.

A Different Harry Today?

Harry’s latest comments offer a glimpse into how his understanding of grief and emotional wellbeing has changed.

In a separate interview with British GQ published in October, he discussed how therapy had helped him become more emotionally connected to his family and friends.

He also acknowledged that processing grief does not mean a person simply gets over losing someone.

For a prince whose departure from royal duties attracted worldwide attention, these revelations provide another perspective on the personal experiences surrounding that decision.

However, they also raise a question about how much of Harry’s emotional struggle remained hidden from public view during those years.

The Duke has spoken openly about his experiences, but his latest reflections suggest that leaving royal life was not necessarily the immediate emotional relief some might have imagined.

Instead, it marked the beginning of a different personal journey.
