Among the claims in the book, published on Tuesday. Collin, 22, alleged that TLC offered his parents, Jon and Kate Gosselin, $2 million dollars to stay married. However, the network didn’t outright say it, they allegedly used Dr. Phil McGraw.
“I found out much later that during the worst of the tension at home, my parents met with Phil McGraw, commonly known as Dr. Phil, behind the scenes,” Collin claimed. “At the time, I only knew the words Dr. Phil from a navy-blue coffee mug my mom regularly drank out of. Today, I know that Dr. Phil was more than a talk-show host; he was a cultural authority.”
Collin referred to McGraw as someone who “became known for inserting himself into the personal crises of families across America and packaging those interventions as both therapy and entertainment.” The Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test star claimed that McGraw got to his family through a “cozy alignment” with TLC.
He wasn’t stepping into our lives as a neutral party,” Collin claimed. “He was stepping in as someone with power, connections, and a real interest in preserving the TLC empire that had formed around my mom.”
Collin alleged that McGraw and TLC attempted to “negotiate a deal to keep their marriage together for the cameras.” He added, “Not for love or healing, but for the show, for the franchise.” Collin wrote that it “still shocks” him McGraw would agree to help “orchestrate what was essentially a contract marriage” for his parents.
After Jon and Kate told TLC about their divorce in January 2009, they allegedly used McGraw to offer $2 millions to “stay in the marriage and pretend the relationship was intact for the sake of the show’s longevity,” Collin claimed. “It was in everyone’s best interests—TLC, the production companies, the daytime talk circuit, the magazines—if my parents kept up a fake front.”
